Dates: 27th September to 1st October, 2017

Arrival: The training will commence at  2pm, Wednesday 27 September 2017, so please arrange to arrive beforehand.
Departure: The training will finish on 12 midday, Sunday 01 October 2017

Who is the training for?

  • Perhaps you are an MBSR teacher and are finding that many of your participants are carrying significant burdens of depression and anxiety yet your course is aimed at ‘stress reduction’
  • Or perhaps as a mindfulness teacher who is also a mental health clinician, you are interested in offering MBCT groups to more clinical populations
  • Or you are already running MBCT groups but would welcome an opportunity to deepen your understanding and approach to this work
The TDR is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a supportive teaching environment as you learn to work with these conditions more skilfully within MBSR, and/or in teaching MBCT, and/or to know when to refer onto a more experienced colleague, especially if you are not a mental health clinician by background.

You are welcome to come and immerse yourself in this training whether or not you have begun formally teaching MBSR or MBCT.

You will need to have completed the MBSR/CT Level I Intensive with MTIA, or an equivalent basic training with another organization. This means you will have:

  • met the prerequisites (ie attended an 8 week MBSR or MBCT course as a participant, attended a silent teacher-led meditation retreat, have a personal mindfulness practice and body-based movement practice, group experience and relevant professional qualifications)
  • already completed a residential training program where you led mindfulness meditation practices, and inquiry into those practices, via teachbacks in small groups

What you will learn:

In your basic training, you will already have had experience of leading practices and honing your inquiry skills. In this training as we focus on the conditions of anxiety and depression, we will especially work on strengthening our capacity in the following domains of the Mindfulness-based Interventions: Teaching Assessment Criteria

  • Conveying course themes through presentations and inquiry

We will be building capacity to work with depression and anxiety effectively through didactic teaching and the inquiry process.  You will have the chance to prepare pieces of teaching relating to depression and anxiety as you would in the class, and present it in small groups where you can give and receive feedback. There will be time at the TDR to collaborate and get support from each other before presenting your piece. To help you prepare, we will send you some relevant pre-reading upon registration.

  • Group and relational skills
Our capacity to hold people with more severe manifestations of anxiety and depression depends on our groundedness in the practice of mindfulness and our relational skills as we warmly engage and hold the group. More than ever, we need to be empathically attuned, steady and gentle. Through your presentation and participation in both the small and large group you will get many opportunities to enhance these skills.

  • Embodiment
The teaching requires that we embody particular ways of being with our participants who are suffering from these painful states. For those with depression, we need to embody a sense of potency in the face of inertia, fatigue and hopelessness; and curiosity and steadiness as a way of approaching anxiety and other aversive emotional states.
We will explore how we move, speak and connect in groups by working gently to develop these natural capacities we all have to embody and express these qualities in our teaching.
